Make It Modern-Hearts on Fire

First up a thousand apologies that this post hasn't gone live until June 3rd.  The challenge quilt was actually finished before the end of May but really icky weather and a head cold that came from no where really put the post on hold.  Hopefully all the quilty fun makes up for it.

This month our Island Batik challenge was to create something modern by the Modern Quilt Guild standards.  I actually designed an original pattern to use for this challenge but a late night surfing of Pinterest caused me to throw it and some of the rules out the window.  Oops.  (you can read more about the original design here)  I went with the theme The Lusty Month of May.  All about spring and love.  The pattern I fell for is called Hearts on Fire and can be found in the book Weekend Quilting by Jemima Flendt.

I needed bright and fun!  Lusty and loud!  So I may have aquired a strip bundle of Island Batik Moroccan Bazaar (hence rule breaking) and paired it with the lovely gray solid batik they provided me in my ambassador box.  The quilt wanted what the quilt wanted.  I cannot apologize and think this should speak to how much I LOVED this fabric.

To change things up a bit and make the quilt my own, I scaled the block size down and set the heart off center.  The 2.5" strip dye provided by AccuQuilt made the cutting of the background fabric an ease.

I used the 2.5" strips to make perfect 2.5" half square triangles.  This may be my new favorite method.

I can honestly say this top pieced up in a weekend...easy peasy.  The hard part was sneaking in the quilting time to finish up, with our local festival going on one full week and then a full week of high school graduation...I know excuses excuses.  But I really wanted to give this lusty quilt all the attention it deserved.  I went to my thread stash and decided on this spool of Aurifil #2615 Aluminum.

Aluminum was a great choice because it melted right into the background fabric, creating a beautiful texture, yet played nicely as a neutral in all the bright rainbow colors.

For my fun quilty filler, I chose to work with a roll of Hobbs Tuscany Collection Silk Blend provided to me by Hobbs Batting in my ambassador box.  I had tried the wool blend before and LOVED it so I couldn't wait to give this a go.

What's the verdict?  I love it too!  It allowed all the quilty texture to shine through and lays like a dream.  Absolutely perfect for this project.

When tackling all that background negative space, I approached it in a divide and conquer kind of way.  I stitched horizontal lines creating sections that could be filled in different ways adding to the modern fun.

The only thing left to do was finish off the binding with left over strips from making the half square triangles.  Creating the perfect quilt of rainbow love.

I hope my verstion of Hearts on Fire has your heart bursting with quilty love!  Everyone needs a lusty month of May to let their hair down and just be wild.  This fabric collection was just what the doctor ordered.

Hi Tish! You sure knocked yourself out of the park on this one. Those fabrics just sitting in their little bundle look fabulous, but this pattern really lets them shine and sparkle. I love what you did on the quilting - it also did its job letting the pattern and fabric shine. Great job! ~smile~ Roseanne

Mighty fine, Tish! Bright and fun and full of life! Glad you’re feeling better, honey. How did you make 2.5” HSTs from 2.5” strips? Did you already cover that and I missed it? XO
