Try It! Scottish Thistle

How do we grow in life if we do not try new things?  This month that is exactly what Island Batik challenged us ambassadors to do.  I had to put some thought into this one...what exactly would I like to try?  My first thought was English Paper Piecing and hexies, but as June rolled around I just wasn't feeling it.  Then it came to me QAYG or quilt as you go.

The process itself of quilt as you go is pretty easy.  Layer your backing and batting then lay your first piece on top and quilt.  Then lay your next piece right side down, stitch, flip, quilt and repeat until you have your finished quilt.  Bind and done!  Okay, that might be the over simplified version but you get the idea.

I decided on a free tutorial I found on Pinterest by Cori at Hey Let's Make Stuff called Scottish Thistle.  She has several other really great QAYG tutorials over there as well.  I landed on this one because it seemed strip friendly and that was mostly what I would be working with.

The first couple rounds where log cabin-ish style and pretty easy.  It was when I had to start adding in some angled pieces things got a bit tricky.

In the end, one side had some chopped off points and the other came out darn near perfect.  I am in love with my wonky little thistle, imperfections and all.

A little Aurifil #2610, light blue grey, helped bring this quilt to life.

Tune in next month when I hope to have two Island Batik projects to share with you.  A special thread challenge project and a sort of secret project using their Freedom line of batiks.  They are as yummy as a Bomb Pop on hot summer day!

Today I'm linking up with Can I Get a Whoop! Whoop!

This is for me as my Mum was born in Scotland, as were her Mum and dad, and they came to NZ in 1907 and 1909, my Grandfather coming out 2 years before my Gran, Mum, aunt and uncle came. Love those quilting lines and your colours.

Hi Tish, what a wonderful little quilt! Thanks so much for sharing your process - it looks easy and it's cool that it's a quilt-as-you-go. If you're interested, we'd love you to link up your post to the Free Motion Mavericks. Hope to see you there. Hi Tish! I'm not a huge fan of thistles but you just may bring me over to the dark side. This piece turned out great and how nice that is was all quilted when you sewed the last seam?! It looks so sweet on the side of the shed - that really brings out and highlights the colors so nicely. ~smile~ Roseanne

What a neat little piece! I've never used QAYG for a mini/single block like this. It really turned out great :)

This looks right in its element as a barn quilt! Great little project to try QAYG as your new technique, I can see others being tempted by this one :)
