When You Wish-Mountaineer Style

This is my first official finish for 2019!!  At the beginning of January I issued my quilt guild's first challenge project (with hopes to do a total of four this year); make anything but only using two colors.  You can use various shades of the two colors but only two colors.  I decided it get working on mine ASAP.

I have been crushing on this free baby quilt pattern called When You Wish at Bonjour Quilts for a while now and decided now is the time.  I am happy to report that this mini quilt is 100% from the stash.  No new fabrics were purchased to make this quilt.  For my color scheme, I went with one of my favorite combos...blue and yellow/gold.  Queue the WVU fight song!

The hard part was narrowing down all the blue and yellow prints I love so much to just eight of each color.

Made mostly of half square triangles, this one pieced together in a flash.

Because I decided to quilt it like the original quilt with lines that echoed the shapes in the quilt, I wanted a neutral thread color.  I went with one of my favorite gray threads, Aurifil #2600 Dove Grey.

It doesn't completely blend into the fabrics but that's okay.  It subtly says, "look at me" and helps to draw the eye to the center of the quilt.

For the backing fabric, I used a yard cut of this adorable bee fabric I picked up earlier last year, when the local big box store started carrying pre packaged yard cuts.  I figured it would come in handy as a backing.

Now I'm already for March and our challenge reveal.  Pat on the back to me for staying ahead so far this year!

When You Wish-Mountaineer Style measures in at 24-ish" square.  My only regret?  That it's not bigger!  With temps clocking in at -15F today, this would have been a great one to snuggle up with!  Stay warm my friends, where ever you are.

  1. Oh, this is a beauty, Tish! I love that there is a bright color in each quarter which keeps me eye moving around the piece. The quilting is perfect too! We are in the midst of the Deep Freeze here in Iowa too...we missed breaking the 1887 record low of -33 by one single degree last night!

  4. Hi Tish! Pretty stylin' I'd say. It reminds me of arrows pointing the way . . . to I don't know what. The good life?! This is really striking in just two colors, and I'd say you did a fabulous job of selecting eight of each. Love! And snow for your photo shoot?! That shouldn't be down there. We're finally warming up slightly. -6F with -15 windchill - that's a whole lot better than yesterday and earlier today. ~smile~ Roseanne

  16. This is fantastic Tish, it looks amazing in just 2 colours. The extra contrast really gives the star extra energy - I love it!

It's crazy to see your quilt there in the snow when it's super hot over here at the moment. Hope you're keeping warm (I'm sure you have plenty of other quilts to snuggle under :)

    Cheers,
    Kirsty

  18. I have really been enjoying 2 color quilts lately myself. Great colors and the quilting is just right to emphasize the star burst piecing.

  19. Go Mounties! I'm under my electric throw and it's cold for us here in the Tulsa area this weekend. My son and his family had planned to come and help me get leaves off my lawn because I'm having an irrigation system put in for my lawn, etc. I just can't pull hoses any more to water the yard and most of my grass has dwindled. I don't have to have the leaves off for them to put in the irrigation system. I just need to have the leaves off in time for the spraying process for the grass when that time comes in the spring. They came and it's just an ordinary visit since it's jus too cold to rake/blow and bag leaves. However, yesterday I didn't have on a coat when I went to lunch and the mall with a friend and I'm the chilly one in our group. It's supposed to be back up in the 50's this coming week. It seems so strange for kids not to have school when it's cold these days. When I was in school, we had school no matter the weather as long as the Upshur county buses would start and the water wasn't too high. I remember good old 9A. We had that bus packed 3 per seat and from front to pack with kids standing from door to door and down the steps as well. There was hardly room to breathe on that bus. We had the same bus drive for all the years all three of us rode the bus. I remember at almost at the end of the run one evening, the bus caught on fire up one of the dirt roads. He just stopped the bus and we got out the back emergency exit. He used the fire extingusher. He left us standing along that dirt road and he walked over to a house that just happened to be close and called the garage in Tennerton and asked them to send another bus for us. Then he came back over and we just stood out there in the light snow and waited for another bus. The next day faithful 9A was rolling again. If the buses had started on a -15 day, we would have had school - not matter how far kids had to walk to wait for the bus and no matter if they had a school bus shed or not. Things sure have changed. I love your quilt. And, of course, I love the colors.
