My Sewing Space(s)

I figured this meme was a great way to start off this post.  Or maybe the one that says, "the only place housework comes before quilting is in the dictionary."  That also sounds pretty accurate.  So why in the world am I going on about my sewing room, or mess of a sewing room(s)?  Well, if you haven't ran into it yet, Melva from Melva Loves Scraps is currently hosting a linky party that she is calling a Studio Hop.  It's a place to be real and show off your sewing room, good, bad and the cluttered.  I say we love them all and think it's an absolutely great idea.

When my daughter has friends over they are warned as they come in the door.  Although, this may look like a house, it is really a quilting studio.  It just so happens we live here as well.  Adapt, or we can put a tent in the yard.  This is usually where Jen looks at me like, really, mom?  I return to my project and belt out what ever song is playing from my music list, and the friends can't decide if I'm one of the coolest parents ever or just a weirdo.

My quilting addiction hobby necessities can be found in three rooms of the house.  The first place is in the back room.  Chances are you would never see this room in our house.  I'm not showing your the whole room now.  It's located in the back and it a catch all of stuff.  This is were our stash lives.  With two quilters in the house (Dave the Quilting Engineer) stuff can pile up quick.  However, most of this was acquired before he got in on the action.

This bookcase contains totes of fabric sorted by color, pre-cut purchases, UFO's, WIP's and a few finished quilts.  Not a lot of time is spent back here, unless we are searching for something we need.

Next up, is the newest space, which some of you may have already "toured."  This is the quilting space.  The addition of shelves and the HQ Sweet Sixteen are new (like past few weeks).  The windows allow plenty of natural lighting and the shelves plenty of storage.

You can see that some of my UFO's waiting for quilting have made their way out of hiding.  I can't use the excuse "out of sight" any more.  And how did I manage to get a picture without one of the two cats in it???

Next up, is the dinning room, where families come together and laugh and enjoy each others company.  We have a dinning room table and we do come together and enjoy each others company while sitting there, but instead of eating, we sew.

This is a view from David's side of the table.  Both of these sets of shelves house books, current projects, pre-cuts and quilting notions.

This is a shot from my side of the table.  The area isn't looking its cleanest, but at the moment we both have projects going on.  I will say it is a loved space.

So, for better or worse, this is where David and I create.  On a great weekend, this is where you will find us.  There has been talk of rearranging the living room so that we can see our television better from the table.  We are Netflix junkies.  This is probably not our dream sewing arrangement, but it is what works for us.  So far there isn't a design wall, but the floor and bed work for our needs.

So what does your sewing space look like?  Is it hot mess like mine, or maybe it looks like it's straight from a Better Homes and Garden magazine?  What ever the case, hop over to Melva Loves Scraps and show it off.

Well I mostly sew in the room that doubles up with the washing machine , the gas boiler , the exercise bike and most importantly the wine rack . We do now have an empty bedroom but I'm afraid I would explode all over the (minimalist) house if I did. Inside my tidy house there is an untidy sewer and reader straining at the bit

Looks like beautiful areas to be creative. Great lighting for your sweet 16 too! Mine is in a bedroom, with plenty of plastic totes for storage. I'm working on cleaning and organizing this week, before I start another project.

I love that you and your husband quilt together. It looks like the perfect arrangement for the two of you <3 Thanks for participating & promoting the Studio Hop!

Aren't you the brave quilter? I admit to not only tidying up my space for the Studio Hop, but also shoving a big pile of "where do I put this?" stuff from spot to spot to keep it out of the photographs.

Love how quilting fills your home! And why shouldn't it? It gives such joy. And to have your husband quilting too is the best. My husband and I share my sewing space but he doesn't quilt. He's a self-employed technical journalist, but he's also an artist (his mother was a professional painter and so he grew up in a studio). Love all the natural light in your sewing room. I have some, but not the right kind for photos so I struggle a bit. And your daughter sounds wonderful! You are the coolest Mom!

Your quilting arrangement is a lot like mine. We also don't eat at the dining room table at present but mostly because I've been using it as a cutting space and fabric dump. I do have a dedicated sewing space but it's a bit of a tip...i guess because i don't have a room at the back ha ha. Maybe I'll take part in this but I might have to clean up somewhat.

You are certainly braver than me, I wouldn't dream of showing anyone my mess of a sewing area.

It's wonderful that your home displays your passion so beautifully. The room with your SS has such wonderful light; it must be fun to sit there and stitch. And who uses their dining room table any way? You are putting it to GOOD use!! Thanks for sharing the link to the hop.

I loved seeing your quilting spaces Tish. Especially your dining room and dual sewing machine set up - that's so great to sew together!

I sew all over my house, too. One machine is in the kitchen, one at the dining room table, a work table and my design floor takes up the 2nd living room area, but most all my stash is upstairs in a spare bedroom. Great seeing you creative space. Makes me feel more normal! XO

Hilarious. I love what you said about the dining room. It's so cute that you guys see together. I have a studio and its moderately messy because I can't create in too much mess. I'm really grateful for it because it's all mine. Since my son left for college last year I admit I'm spilling over into his room too. Because let's face it, quilting takes up space.and its worth it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Tish! I inherited a china cabinet VERY similar to the one you show with your knick knacks and since I already have knick knacks in other places, that cabinet is where my fabric stash lives! Or at least when our house is finished, it will be. :)

Your house is perfect for sewing, I so wish my husband would get into it more, I drive him crazy as he likes tidy and I am messy. My sewing room is under construction just now, so half my mess is in my room and half in the dining room. When he is out I also set up the ironing board in the kitchen and I'm up and own the stairs between the three. You can bet the one pin I loose he will find......in his foot!!

Two people, three sewing areas - the maths adds up for me! It looks like a good arrangement and how fun to have a sewing partner sitting opposite.

Your dining room looks like a great place for sewing, a big table and natural light. I took over the guest bedroom for my sewing room and it is so tiny that as soon as I have more than 2 things out of place it looks like a tornado came through :)

Looks like your sewing space is a happy place for both of you. I think this is great that you two are both creating and quilting together!

I think it is the coolest thing ever to have a common sewing area like that. What a great time to do what you love and still hang out together. My sewing companion is Netflix. I need to have something on while I am sewing. It is just the way it always has been. :)

Way to own your space, no apologies. I love that your hubby quilts too and that it is obviously just as much a passion for him. Way to go both of you. I'd love to see more of your creations! Do you and hubby ever collaborate with each other on a project or are you individuals creatively?

I'm just now getting around to Melva's linky party and I love your openness to showing us around. It's a wonderful area to create together. So glad you and your husband share this passion-obsession together. Thanks for the tour. How do you like your Sweet 16? I am toying with getting a quilting machine and looking for lots of info in that area.
