Hive Crashing

One of the many things I enjoy reading about in the online quilting community is Hive Crashing.  What is that you ask?  It's when someone who is not in a particular quilting bee hive, decides to make the chosen queen for the month's block and send it to her.  I like to think of it as the quilting version of toilet papering a house, cow tipping or snipe hunting, only its a guten prank (good prank, for those non The Office junkies).

So this month I decided to jump right in and crash Helen at Midget Gem Quilt's bee hive.  Helen is the Queen Sheba of her hive this month and she chose the Quatrefoil block and posted a link to Blossom Heart Quilt's tutorial for making it.  Her colors were blue and orange and the inspiration for this block came from the blue sky and orange light filtering through a window, how cool is that???

I've been online friends with Helen since the 2015 New Bloggers Blog Hop and I've been wanting to do something for her, this block was perfect.

So I ran to my stash and did a quick fabric pull and...

If you look closely, you can see the white backing for Free Fall at the top of the picture.

quickly commenced to cutting and...

sewing.

And in a flash I had two Quarterfoil blocks to send her.

Hopefully, these blocks will work with all the other wonderful blocks that Helen receives.

A side note to some of the fabrics used in the blocks; I think I used most of these fabrics in my recent 182 Solstice Challenge Quilt aka "the beast."  Last year I followed along as Helen created a wedding quilt for her son and his wife.  She called it Coulter Wedding Quilt aka "the behemoth."  The behemoth took on it's own personality and I called it a ledged.  After her finish, and since I was such a fan, Helen sent to me some scrap fabric from the quilt.  So, after finishing the beast I declared it must be the behemoth's cousin and now Helen has a bit of the beast with her.  I can't wait to watch as her quilt comes together.

Will I join a bee hive?  I'm not opposed to it.  It seems like great fun, but I'm not sure I'm ready for the commitment.  Will I hive crash again?  I think so, when the time is right.  Do you participate in bee hives?  Have you ever crashed a hive?  I'd love to hear about it.

Today I'm linking up with Finished or Not Friday Let's Bee Social and Midweek Makers.

I have never heard of "Hive Crashing" before! How fun for the recipient to receive surprise blocks on top of blocks they are already expecting. Yours are gorgeous.

I have also never heard of Hive Crashing! I think it's a great way to play along, yet not commit to a Bee. I'm pretty sure Helen will be very happy with the blocks you made!

Hi Tish,
I love the hive crash! I have never participated in a bee hive. I'm not even sure how to join one! But this is beyond sweet, and I love the back story. How fun - I'm sure Helen will love the fabric choices you made especially since there is meaning behind them. ~smile~

Funny you should bring up hive crashing. I've never heard the term, but I was looking at some blocks this week and thinking it would be fun to make one of the blocks for the queen and wondered if I could do that (yeah, the rule follower in me popped up there). So I feel like you've just given me permission, if I choose to crash. Those blocks, Tish, are really cool. The darker one just pops! I'll bet she'll make a beauty out of the leftover from the Beast and Behemoth :-)

I did a bee for the first time last year and am in two bees this year, and I love it! It's a great way to try lots of things without committing to an entire quilt, and a great way to make quilty friends. I have hive crashed, but only within my bee, not in a bee I wasn't participating in. Though now that you mention it, that sounds like fun!

Helen will want you to "crash" more often-your blocks are gorgeous!

Not only are the blocks you made great, but I love the connection of all the fabric you used and the gifting and receiving back and forth between you two. :)

I'm in two bees this year and they've been great experiences for different reasons but in common is the Queen's requests choose the colours and block, moving you out of your usual fallback schemes and techniques. I've heard of hive crashing in Stash Bee and it looks like fun. I guess the hard part is getting the address for posting if you're not actually in the bee.
Love your blocks and Helen will be pleased!

I hadn't heard of hive crashing. What fun! I do have hive envy, sometimes, or is it hive stalking? Your blocks are such a wonderful addition and I can tell Helen is thrilled. Such a pretty design and colors, and knowing the source of the pattern inspiration makes them special.

What a fun 'prank' to play. I have never joined a hive. Same as you, the commitment is too much! This is a fun way to participate without the commitment. Beautiful blocks.

How lovely that you 'crashed' our beehive group. I have never heard of the term before and love it😊 and you have put me to shame as I am two months behind...I need to stop sleeping lol....

Beautiful blocks

Lovely post and beautiful blocks. I've been in Bees since 2013 and just can't seem to take a break yet! This year I am making blocks I never tried before and it is tons of fun!

Oh my goodness! What a great idea! I'm in a bee for the first time this year, also one of the Blossom Heart swarms! I'm actually the bee for the first time next month! I would be so excited if someone made me a surprise block. I also love the idea of surprising someone. The fun of a bee without the commitment!!
