Quilting Confessions

This month I decided to try something a bit new for me, conquering a fear, learning a new skill, or possibly providing you with many laughs (depending on how this turns out).  My dear friend, Julie over at Pink Doxies, recently started hosting a new monthly linky party called #BraveQuilter encouraging us to mark things off our quilting bucket list and challenge ourselves to try something new.

So this leads me to my Quilting Confession; Tish, has never really tried to sew something that is 3D.  GASP!  So what exactly does this mean?

I consider myself to be a 2D quilter...I've only made quilts.  No bags.  No totes.  No pin cushions.  Not even a doll.  Just flat.  Nothing with dimensions (unless you count a folded or rolled quilt).  I read about all my other quilty friends making beautiful bags with nifty pouches.  Drawstring wonders to hold all of your little valuables.  Cute baskets to catch and hold your unwanted threads.
My quilting partner in crime, Sandra at mmm! quilts, even designed and wrote a pattern for Moda Bake Shop for her Pyramid Pouch.

I'm sitting over here in wonderland hoping no one notices that my sewing forte doesn't include these skills.  I'll be honest zippers seem scary.

AHHHHHH!!!  Oh, sorry, it's just a coat zipper.  But you do see what I mean, right?

So I have decided this month, with big girl panties on, to try to make a Pixie Basket.  I first learned about this cute little basket when Jayne over at Twiggy and Opal made one last month.

The pattern is called Pixie Basket by Fabric Mutt.  It seems like a quick little project, though I have only skimmed the directions at this point.  With our community's up coming Strawberry Festival in May, it seems like a perfect little item to sell at the guild's boutique.

Things might be a bit quiet over here in wonderland this month.  I have a few silent projects going on, but hopefully, I can show you my finished Labyrinth quilt next week and show you my finished Pixie Basket (or maybe two) before April May sneaks up on us.

Also, are you a new quilt blogger?  Have you been blogging for less than two years?  Do you want to make new quilting friends?  Good news!

Sign ups for the 2016 New Bloggers Blog Hop are open now till April 30th.  This year's hop is being hosted by Yvonne at Quilting Jetgirl, Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs and Stephanie at Late Night Quilter.  I participated last year and it was the best blogging decision I ever made.  I have made so many friends, learned blogging advice and technical aspects of blogging I didn't even know existed and was encouraged to try so many new quilty things.  I can say with 100% certainty, this hop helped me grow as a quilter.  So much so, I am debating on signing up again...technically my blog is only a year old.  But if you are new to blogging, do not waist time.  Click on any of the links above to head over to the hosts' pages to read more and change the way you blog forever.

First up, that zipper picture is hilarious! Who knew zippers could look so scary? Congratulations on tackling something new. 3D sewing can be a lot of fun, and gives you a whole new reason to buy pretty fabrics, lol. Good luck with the basket :)

Zippers are totally scary and I am also in the 2D camp. Good luck with the pixie basket - it is seriously cute!

I'm sure you can triumph making the Pixie Basket, especially if you have your big girl panties on.

You can do it! You can do it! (That's me cheering you on) Baskets are a great way to start and before you know it, you'll be making them for all your friends!

I was not interested in making 3D things...or so I thought. Until I started making bags and purses and now I'm totally into it. So ya never know until you try...

I don't make 3D things very often, but they are all so CUTE! Have fun. I can't wait to see your basket. I think a Pixie is a great place to start.

That's a scary looking zipper...yikes. Good luck with your new adventure. I really like the Open Wide Zipper Pouch tutorial by Noodlehead. Easy zippered pouch for a first attempt.

wish I could join your group... it's been a bit over two years but I'm still a little blog. Lots of posts though! I still feel new and don't understand so much about blog land. I like your attitude.

Well, as a fellow #BraveQuilter, you know my history with zippers. But I know you can tackle them when you want to. I highly recommend the pattern I used by Noodlehead--Wide Open Zipper Pouch. Clear directions and lots of photos. Like you, I'm also not much of a 3D quilter. I lust after bags, baskets, catchalls and all the cute things my friends seem to make all the time. But I saw the Pixie Baskets and like you I fell in love! Really, they are fairly easy and very, very addictive. The tutorial at Fabric Mutt is really clear although I must admit I took it real slow and studied those photos for a long time before starting. Good luck, and be brave! You can do this.

Thank you for a good giggle! I love that shark zip! Good luck with your venture into 3D, I'm sure you'll love it!

Bahaha I burst out loud laughing at the shark zipper pic. Trust you! Good reminder on the New Bloggers--guess I'll go back and update my post I just published. And, knowing you, you will make like 10 little baskets and improve the pattern!

PS Thanks for the shout-out on the Pyramid Pouch. mwah!

Well that little pixie basket is just adorable! I may have to make one (or ten) of those too! Good luck with it, you'll be fine. I find bags a very satisfying make, as they seem so quick compared to full-sized quilts.

Oh no, Tish. Don't do it. Stop now while you still can. Those pixie baskets, pouches and 3-D things are little devils. They are extremely addictive and you can never stop at one. How do I know?
Well, I made one fabric basket. It was not perfect. So I looked for another pattern and made two more. Then I made changes to the pattern to improve it and made two more. Right now, I have 5 fabric baskets sitting on my table and I want to make just a few more till I can master the pattern. In the mean time, three quilt tops languish away waiting to be quilted. So go ahead if you want, but you are forewarned, sister!!!
Hugs,
Preeti.
