UFO Busting #34

Momma's back from her four day quilting retreat and she is refreshed and ready to get things done!  I did manage to get a few things accomplished while away at retreat and hit the ground running with a few small projects as soon as I was back home.

This is me talking about Laurel Burst at my guild meeting.
The first item I tackled while away was to finish piecing this quilt top (full disclosure all the blocks were already pieced but four).  I'm calling the pattern Laurel Burst and it will be released within the next few weeks.

To celebrate this finished I decided to dig into these yummy charms of Moda's Fire & Ice Batkis.

I decided to use the 2 Charms and a yard of fabric pattern to create a modern baby quilt.  What I didn't do was measure the charms to make sure they were 5".  I'm going to go out on a limb and say they were slightly bigger than 5" or maybe I was talking and laughing and cut my rectangles too small.

Whatever the case, nothing lined up like it should.  Thank goodness for Julie's large design wall and quilty friends.  Beth and I stayed up for some late night sewing and played around with my rows.  Now I just need to stitch them together.  Lesson learned...measure measure measure.  I love pre cuts so much, but I find more often than not, they are not exactly accurate.

After my return home, I did what every logical quilter does and started yet another project.  This time it is using these beautiful ombre fabrics.  All I can say is this quilt will totally leave our heads Spinning, but in a very good way.

My next big thing is scraps.  We pretty much all have them to varying degrees.  So far my method of dealing with them has been to shove them in totes and ignore them.  No more!  It is time to manage them and ultimately use them.  I acquired several small bags of scraps that needed rehomed during the retreat and decided now is the time to work on organizing.

I pulled out my green tote (it was on top), sorted all green fabrics from the rehomed fabrics and commenced to sorting and cutting.  Just when I was starting to reach the bottom of my table, this shows up...

The story behind this box is...several years ago I gave some of my unwanted scrap fabrics to my friend's daughter who was making sorority letter shirts and selling them at college.  Since she's no longer doing that, she decided to give her box of unused fabrics to me.  It's like my scraps multiplied like little rabbits!  So back to resorting for green.  I hope so show you next week how I went about sorting and cutting my fabrics.  Also I hope to show you neat little piles of home made pre cuts.

Now, a huge thank you to Sandra at mmm!quilts for baby sitting the linky last week while I was away!  If you missed last week's party make sure you check out Wendy at Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life's Autumn Drive.

All those bright bold colors sure do pop against that gray Grunge background.  It's just like changing leaves on trees on a rainy fall day, and that happened to be her inspiration.  Make sure you show Wendy some love and check out this super fun mini quilt.

Now that you know what we've been up to, how about you?  Link up below and let's get this party started!

May your weekend party on like a second birthday party you were not expecting!  Got to love having friends that work at your favorite restaurant and know when your birthday is/was.

Thanks for the highlight, Tish & Sandra! I'm about to write up my post of Autumn Drive in the wild, so it's fun to see it pop up here first. You know I love Laurel Burst, and I'm looking forward to the pattern release.

Hi Tish! I hate this that I can't see the post when I comment! How am I suppose to remember all the things I was going to comment on. First of all - that ombre fabric!! I saw Beth shared some this week too. I am a wee bit jealous - just a wee bit. It's not nice to be jealous of friends . . . so I am actually have for both of you. Can't wait to see what that deliciousness becomes. Laurel Burst is just great, and OMG on that box of scraps. I look forward to seeing your nice little or really not so little piles of homemade precuts - the purchased precuts are ALWAYS off in my experience. Enough so to never buy them again. Guess I'll have to use up all of those I have purchased and just make my own going forward. Happy Saturday! ~smile~ Roseanne

I really like Laurel Burst - how pretty in the colors you chose! Your retreat looks productive, and hey, scraps! I've been thinking about doing something because mine are eating me out of house and home and multiplying everywhere, too. Thanks for sharing all that you're doing. What always throws me off on pre-cuts is the pinked sides. I know it's to help keep them from shredding, but then I never know whether the 5" is the innie or the outie points! I didn't have anything to post yesterday or today. Lots of prep work and secret stuff.

Your Laurel Burst is very nice. How did you come up with that name? Be careful with those scraps! They are all consuming.

Wow, you did hit the ground running! You must have been very rested and motivated! ;) Laurel Burst turned out so nice. Any ideas on the quilting yet? I can't wait to see how you Spin that ombre fabric... Jenny looks thrilled with cream on her face and that lovely hat on her head. She should add that to her fall wardrobe. LOL

Your Laurel Burst is really pretty! Just think how much faster those scraps would be multiplying if you weren't focused on getting them used up.

Hi Tish! You don't have this wonderful pattern under your Patterns tab yet. I am mentioning in on my blog next week, and thought I'd just let you know. Thank you again for picking me as a winner for Fireburst!! I'm making some future quilting plans. ~smile~ Roseanne
