The Cut And The Pieced

I had been seeing my current May challenge project for a few months.  I really thought we had hit it off.  It had everything I loved, open space for quilting and beautiful simple colors.

The prints on the purple and black Island Batik fabrics made my heart skip a beat, but something was just off for me.

Then it entered my life.  A quilt I innocently found on Pinterest and I knew I had to have it.  I ordered the book.  Try as I may, I wanted it to work for me and my original quilt.  I told my fabrics the direction I wanted us to go and they were honest with me, they didn't quite see my vision.  They didn't know if they could be the new quilt I imagined in my head.  Then she walked in...

My heart stopped.  She got me and what I wanted.  No! No!  It's wrong.  I can't being doing this.  She is not from my box, but look at her.  How can I say no?  I cannot.

So I introduced her to a few of the box fabrics.  One was a smooth and sleek solid gray.  He's woven a bit tighter than other solids and really knows how to hold it together under pressure without fraying at the seams.

The other was dainty lavender strips, sure to play nicely among the rainbow of fun.

I've always known you can create 2.5" half square triangles using 2.5" strips, but in my years of quilting I've never tried it.  I've always been a slap two squares together sew on each side of the line, press and trim kind of girl.  The time has come to let my hair down, mark my ruler with tape and create some squares from strip sets.

This method worked perfectly.  Absolutely no trimming required.  After all 88 color squares were made, I needed to construct 20 gray and color half square triangles.  After some thought, I cut three perfect strips using my AccuQuilt Go! Cutter.

Then I chain pieced small sections of colored strips to it and used the same method for cutting the squares.

I was left with 20 perfect little squares, ready and waiting for some fun.

Oh, where are these little triangles headed?  Will I stay focused so all these half square triangles come together to make sweet quilty love?  Is there yet again another distraction around the corner driving a wedge between me and my new quilt interest?  Will I be kicked out of the club for not following the rules or will I be granted a pardon because the judge loves my quilt as much as I do?  I plead the quilt wants what it wants.  Tune in next week to The Cut and The Pieced.

  1. Your quilt this month is really saucy, isn't she?! I love that you tried a new HST method and look forward to seeing more about where this is headed.

  2. those fabrics. Oh how they sing with beauty, and what a nifty way to do those pesky triangles.A lot quicker than what I do, so I need to do some research? and give it a go.

  4. Bated breath - I'm sitting on the edge of my chair for the next episode. How long do we have to wait?? I love that method you shared for HSTs. I've never tried it myself . . . but I may be more apt to now. ~smile~ Roseanne

  9. Love the Young and the Restless illusion (of course I think you meant it). I can't wait to see what you did and yes, that 2.5 HST out of a strip is genius - I am always so glad when I can figure some thing like that out! Good luck crossing the finish line on this. My top is done. Quilting over the next few days - need the right color thread first.
